Let’s Learn Pizza Fractions is a playful and hands-on educational toolkit created to make learning fractions fun, approachable, and memorable for children aged 9 to 12. Developed as part of a university project, the objective was to design a resource that brings creativity into the learning space while supporting key outcomes from the VCAA curriculum.
Fractions are often considered a challenging topic for young learners. This toolkit uses the universally loved concept of pizza to make fractional concepts easier to understand. From recognising parts of a whole to working through more advanced ideas like multiplying and dividing mixed fractions, the resource encourages exploration and builds confidence.
The kit includes a wide range of tactile and visual learning materials such as illustrated fraction cards, whiteboards, pizza pieces, and teacher support resources. Each element was carefully designed to suit different learning styles and to help students engage with content in a fun and meaningful way. The visuals are bright, friendly, and intentionally crafted to spark curiosity and maintain interest.
To support educators, Let’s Learn Pizza Fractions also comes with a full set of ready to use lesson plans tailored to students in Years 3 through 6. Each lesson is aligned with curriculum outcomes and includes suggested activities and extension tasks, making the toolkit practical and flexible for classroom or home use.
This project gave me the opportunity to explore how thoughtful design can improve educational outcomes and build more enjoyable learning experiences. Let’s Learn Pizza Fractions brings together playful design, meaningful learning, and practical teaching support to create a resource that makes maths feel exciting and accessible.
